HOW TO KEEP WORMS ALIVE TO FISHING
You have no reason to discard the worms left on the last fishing trip. Worms are easy to take care of and will breed quickly if left in place. If there are only a few worms, keep them in the fridge. If you want to save money on long-term worms, place them in a dedicated box outdoors and let them grow on their own.
Store the worms in the refrigerator
Think about how this works for your worms. This technique is best used with a small number of worms and will be used within a month.
For example, if you buy a small cup of worms for fishing and don’t use it all, you can keep it in the fridge for the next fishing trip. If you have a big box with thousands of worms, instead of storing them in a refrigerator, you need to store them in a box specifically for them.
Close the worm box to keep moist and put in the refrigerator. Check the worms every few days to make sure they are eating enough and the substrate is moist enough. If necessary, place a few drops of water in the container to moisten the worm’s substrate.
Put worms in opaque plastic or foam containers. If you use transparent plastic containers, light will penetrate the soil and confuse the worms. Secure the soil or mulch that comes with the worms. If you buy the worms in the appropriate box, you don’t need to move them away.
Feed the worm once a week. Sprinkle two or three tablespoons of damp coffee grounds into the box. Try to spread the coffee grounds evenly throughout the box. You can also feed them powdered food by sprinkling a few teaspoons of food on top of the worms.
You can buy powdered food for worms at most bait stores.
Wait until the worms finish eating the food to feed them again. If you overfeed, the worm will die.
Keep worms in specialized boxes
Prepare a large plastic container
Choose a bin large enough to hold all the worms. You need an area of at least 0.1 square meters for 1,000 worms. Drill holes at the edge and bottom of the barrel for easy drainage.
- Buy a large plastic container for mixing cement at a hardware store near your home or a plastic container at a plastic store.
- You can also make your own wooden worm case.
